Fed: Most of Canberra bushfire clearing finished - Stanhope
CANBERRA, April 28 AAP - Most of the ruins of homes destroyed by the Canberra bushfireshad now been cleared, ahead of schedule, ACT Chief Minister Jon Stanhope said today.
Progress had been excellent in the first 100 days of the recovery process, he said.
Mr Stanhope thanked thousands of volunteers as well as business and government employeeswho had helped.
"I would also like to thank Bovis Lend Lease for their hard work over the past threemonths clearing blocks in fire-affected suburbs within the government's four-month clean-updeadline," he said in a statement.
The short-term accommodation needs of almost 500 families left homeless by the January18 fires had been met, he said.
