NSW: Call for judicial inquiry into detention centres

A refugee advocate has called for an independent judicial inquiry into refugee detention
centres, saying Australia's treatment of immigrant children is sick and obscene.

MARION LE says the case of the six-year-old Iranian boy who's refusing to eat or drink
shows the system is wrong.

The boy has been locked up in Sydney's Villawood detention centre for 15 months.

Ms LE has denied suggestions by immigration minister PHILIP RUDDOCK that the boy's
parents are behind his refusal to eat.

She says the only solution is to grant his family refugee status and release them into
the community.
