LOS ANGELES -- Singer k.d. lang's 10-gallon hat is in storage, her lariat is on hold, and her Patsy is in de-Cline.

Hard to believe the gender-bending star who added irony to country music and took western wear into the ozone has torched her twang. But as it turns out, lang is well on her way to becoming alternative pop's first bona fide chanteuse, without a plaid skirt or toy six-gun in sight.

``No matter what I do, you always get the record company or fans saying it's a departure,'' lang said. ``But whatever I do always seems perfectly natural to me.''
